Six Speed transmissions are becoming more popular, as the U.S. government continues to mandate more fuel efficiency in cars. Even companies like Ford, long known selling fuel in-efficient trucks and SUVs is beginning to offer six speed transmissions in many of their most popular models.

The reason is simple: “Transmission technology is playing a key role in bringing down fuel consumption,” said Craig Renneker, chief engineer for new automatic transmissions for Ford Powertrain Operations. “That’s why Ford is rolling out an industry-leading array of fuel-efficient, six-speed automatic transmissions on more than half of the North American product lineup, including the new 2009 Ford F-150.”

That’s right, even the Ford F-150 will now come equipped with a six speed transmission as North American heavyweight auto makers are betting that improvements in the powertrain will be their ticket to eventual salvation. Ford has even developed a new dual-clutch transmission called Powershift, which shows the company’s commitment to cars that offer better gas mileage. Of course that’s what’s selling right now in the U.S. and Europe, so it’s no wonder the company has developed the love for fuel efficiency.

Fuel efficiency is not the only reason a consumer would choose a six speed transmission. Some drivers actually consider shifting their way through six gears to be a whole lot of fun. In fact, six speed transmissions are a key selling point for the BMW Series 3 Sedan. According to the company, “Standard for the BMW 3 Series Sedan, the six-speed transmission system extracts even more driving pleasure from the muscular torque of the engines.”

Market share is growing for six speed transmissions, so you can expect to see offerings from all the major manufacturers. If you like increased fuel efficiency, and extra driving control, the six speed transmission is well worth a look.
