General Motors of Canada LTD has decided to invest $290 million in Ontario. The move will help shore up manufacturing operations in St. Catharines and Oshawa.

GM’s investment comes on the eve of a federal election and follows last week’s announcement by the Conservative government that it would provide up to $80 million in a “repayable contribution” to help reopen a Ford engine plant in struggling Windsor.

Union officials questioned the timing of the two announcements in view of Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s plan to call an election today.

Windsor, Oshawa and St. Catharines have suffered thousands of job losses and scores of plant closures in the last few years because of the downturn in the manufacturing sector.

GM is in the midst of a global restructuring in which they hope to transform their North American manufacturing plants into producing alternative fuel and more fuel efficient vehicles.
